The idea of reaching and serving the community with a foodbank came about after many people praying for ideas on how best to do that. A word was given “Storehouse” and helping those in need due to the living wage and cost of living situation. Therefore, in September 2012, we established the ‘Storehouse’ Birchington-on-sea, and began gathering supporting organisations and agencies, including schools to help us meet this end all across Thanet.

Storehouse is well supported in many ways by the community, through food and monetary donations. Despite it being a slow beginning, we have grown to the point where we are providing our services to roughly 25-30 families and singles per week with food, toiletries and on special occasions and holidays, toys etc., when, or if available. Over the course of the year we supply between 2,500 – 3,000 bags of food.

To access this service we require a referral from one of our supporting organisations; school family, liaison officer, social worker, porch light, probation worker. Once referred, it is the individual’s responsibility to collect their support package or organise someone to collect it for them (we appreciate being informed who will be picking up the package in advance). We are unable to deliver, except in exceptional circumstances.
We have several collections points dotted around Birchington, both Co-Op’s and all the local churches. During Harvest and associated festivals it is an important gathering time where schools and churches often donate generously to the cause. Local business on Station Road such as R. C Wale & Son Butchers and Monty greengrocers make special arrangements with the Storehouse and its clients on first time purchase and during christmas and Easter.
The work is organised and carried out by a group of dedicated, passionate and compassionate volunteers with a heart to serve the community.
