Each evening at The Loft is divided into two parts, both of which are an important part of the overall evening.
For the first 45 minutes, everyone comes together in the front hall for a programme of group games, upfront challenges, music and a short talk. This shared time is a central part of The Loft. It gives everyone the opportunity to join in, have fun together, build friendships and engage with the theme or message for the evening.
For the second 45 minutes, the rest of The Loft opens for free time. Young people can relax with friends and make use of the Tuck Shop, pool table, sofas and social space, table football, PlayStation and table tennis.
The format gives us the best of both worlds: time together as a whole group, followed by plenty of opportunity to relax, socialise and enjoy the different activities available around the building.
We want The Loft to be a place where both young people and leaders feel physically and emotionally safe. We therefore have a clear set of expectations and rules which everyone attending The Loft is expected to follow.
Every young person attending The Loft must have an up-to-date parental or guardian consent form completed and returned to us. These forms provide important contact, medical and safeguarding information and help us to care properly for the young people who attend.
Where a completed consent form is required, we may be unable to admit a young person until it has been returned.
The organised first part of the evening is an important and integral part of The Loft, rather than simply something that takes place before free time. We therefore encourage everyone who attends to be part of it and to participate as fully as they are able.
We understand that there may occasionally be an activity that a young person does not wish, or is unable, to take part in. In these circumstances, they will normally be asked to remain with the group and sit quietly to the side while the activity takes place.
Our programme regularly includes energetic games and activities, so we ask young people to come wearing suitable and appropriate clothing for active games.
Appropriate clothing helps everyone to participate comfortably and safely and also protects the dignity and modesty of those taking part.
Young people are welcome to arrive a little late, but The Loft is not intended to operate as a drop-in session for the final free-time section only. Entry therefore closes 20 minutes after each session begins:
Years 7–8: entry closes at 6:20 pm
Years 9–13: entry closes at 7:50 pm
This helps us to maintain the structure of the evening, ensures that everyone is included in the shared part of The Loft, and allows young people to experience the evening as a whole.
